The Gideons

We had Gideons Sunday at our church today. In spite of our theological differences regarding "The Sinners Prayer" this organization does a wonderful job of passing out Scriptures. I was blessed to attend their Pastor Appreciation Dinner in Columbus this past Friday. I was impressed by their dedication to and belief in the power of the Word of God. The Word of God convicts and convinces people of sin and brings sinners to faith by the power of the Spirit. Many stories from the field were shared that evening ( and some after our service this morning ). One such story can serve as an example to we Lutherans as we share our faith, that is, just trust the Word to do the work.

This particular Gideon was passing out Bibles on a college campus. He gives a Bible to a young lady who professes to be an atheist. The Gideon responds by quoting John 3:16. He asks if she believes that God loves her. Her response is that she doesn't believe in God. He then begins to read from the Bible that all have sinned. He inquires of the young lady if she believes that she is a sinner. The young woman says, "Yes, I am a big sinner." The Gideon then asks the definitive question: "Against Whom, have you sinned?"

The woman fell silent, then asked for a Bible and for 4 Bibles for her friends that were with her.

Priceless!

Our Mission is simple, share and Word and plant the Word which convicts of sin and brings the sinner to faith in Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit.
